How to Upload Beats to SoundCloud

SoundCloud is where a lot of the underground actually listens. Artists dig through it for production, repost chains push tracks between communities, and an embedded SoundCloud player travels anywhere a link does. For a producer, it's a discovery channel that compounds — but only if your uploads are consistent, tagged properly, and you understand the platform's limits before you commit a catalogue to it. Here's the full process.

Step 1: Know your upload limit before you start

This is the single most important thing about SoundCloud for a beat catalogue, so it comes first. SoundCloud caps how much you can upload based on your SoundCloud plan — not per month, but in total, across your whole profile. A free account gets 2 hours of total upload time. Paid plans raise the cap, and the top tier (Artist Pro) removes it entirely with unlimited uploads.

Two hours sounds like a lot until you do the maths: at three minutes a beat, that's roughly 40 beats — and then your profile is full. So decide upfront: either upgrade your SoundCloud plan for unlimited uploads, or accept the cap and treat SoundCloud as a curated shopfront for your best work rather than a mirror of your full catalogue. Unlike YouTube and BeatStars, this is a hard catalogue limit, set and enforced by SoundCloud itself.

Step 2: Prepare the audio

Upload the highest-quality file you have — a WAV is ideal, since SoundCloud transcodes for streaming and a better source means a better stream. Keep your tagged preview logic consistent with the rest of your catalogue: if your BeatStars previews are voice-tagged, tag the SoundCloud upload the same way so a stolen rip is worthless.

Step 3: Title, artwork and description

The type-beat convention works on SoundCloud the same way it works everywhere else: [Artist] Type Beat - [Mood] is what artists actually type into the search bar. Use square artwork (800×800 or larger) consistent with your brand — on SoundCloud your artwork is your thumbnail, your embed and your identity all at once. In the description, lead with the BPM and key, then put your licensing link front and centre: SoundCloud has no built-in beat licensing, so the description is the bridge between a listener and a buyer.

Step 4: Tags and genre

SoundCloud's discovery leans heavily on genre and tags. Set the primary genre accurately, then add tags for the artist lane, mood, BPM and key. Accurate, consistent tagging across your catalogue teaches the platform who to recommend you to — and a mis-tagged beat simply never finds its audience.

Step 5: Publish and keep a cadence

Hit upload, confirm the track is public, and share the link. SoundCloud rewards regularity: profiles that post on a steady rhythm hold their audience better than profiles that dump ten tracks and go silent for two months. Scheduling your drops evenly across the month does more for you than any single upload.

The faster way: automate the whole chain

Everything above — the metadata, the tagging, the artwork, the publish step — is the same ritual for every single beat, which makes it exactly the kind of work worth automating. Audia connects to SoundCloud through its official API, with your sign-in stored securely in your Mac's keychain, and publishes the track for you with the title, tags and description already generated — in the same one-click flow as your YouTube, BeatStars and Airbit uploads. Your hands-on time is about 30 seconds per beat, for all four platforms at once.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I upload to SoundCloud for free?

A free SoundCloud account is limited to 2 hours of total upload time across your whole profile. Paid plans raise the cap, and the top tier (Artist Pro) removes it entirely, giving you unlimited uploads.

Is SoundCloud good for selling beats?

SoundCloud is a discovery platform rather than a marketplace — there's no built-in beat licensing. The standard approach is to use SoundCloud to get heard, and put your licensing link in the track description so listeners have a direct path to purchase.

Can I automate uploading beats to SoundCloud?

Yes. A desktop tool that authenticates through SoundCloud's official API can analyse your beat, generate the metadata and tags, and publish the track for you — alongside your YouTube, BeatStars and Airbit uploads — in a single action.
